File:Christmas light in form of a star.jpg

I’m in love, she said, I didn’t say it
in front of everyone ‘cause I didn’t
want to embarrass you or make you blush.

My dry wit, my lost chances, what did I
say but If I could blush, I can’t—don’t—blush.
Did she notice me stumbling on my words?

Stuttering and looking down was my flub,
'cause then I didn’t see her leave—didn’t catch
the chance of walking with her out the door.

Just outside a great star lit up the dark.
In the instant before I realized
it topped a tree, I felt God stop and smile.

I’m wearing that smile now—miles later, home
and well fed—'cause the star came out to shine
reminding me of  joy unseen, unknown.

Oh my goodness, how I love this poem.....especially the star atop the tree, and feeling God smile........and happiness, even though one flubs one's chances because, even so, life is so freaking beautiful - and unexpected.

I don't know the backstory of this poem, but I do think if she told you she was in love it was with an element of trust! And I think you were definitely honored.
