April's Opening

April obliges us with rain today,
and promises to behave long enough
to start flowers in this temperate zone.

Assorted birds cheer April on with song--
as loud as Phillies fans at spring training
pre-season open in Cincinnati.

(We pray no rain or snow falls on our game,
recap wins and losses against the Reds,
prepare viewing strategies and snacks.)

April worms cultivate our lawns and feed
the robins, sacrificing their full lives
in service, true models of faithfulness.

How easy to forget team sports when birds
scout food and build their nests in waiting woods
and sprouting gardens—April’s opening.

(April is International Poetry Month.)

Very well composed marriage of ideas (sports and nature).

A delightful poem full of baseball, birds and their nests, flowers and gardens...full of hope for the new season.
