Becoming Happiness

“. . . do not think that the person who is trying to console you
lives effortlessly among the simple, quiet words that sometimes
make you feel better. His life is full of troubles and sadness
and falls far short of them.  But if it were any different
he could never have found the words that he did.”
― Rainer Maria RilkeLetters to a Young Poet

Intention hasn’t grown
happiness for me—not
like seeds grow into annuals
nor clouds to rain.

But between solitudes,
between pity and fear,
between deluge and drought,
there lies a happy place.

Rising like an island
in peripheral vision,
it’s not there when sought.

But it invites us in
through faces along the way,
through songs, through sidewalk trees
and through meadow flowers.

And I welcome it like
fresh air and community,
like red rose buds opening
without a whimper, whispering.

Yes, happiness can be elusive. Just out of view, when we seek. Then quite unexpected, we remember it was here. A very nice poem, it made me happy.

"Rising like an island

This is such a beautiful poem Susan, I think happiness is like a butterfly that comes to rest on your hand whilst you are sitting in the garden; it delights you but then flys away.

Happiness will always be appreciated for which more will come! Very true Susan! It works that way. Acknowledging it opens the door wider!

Happiness is elusive most of the time. It is nice when it pops out at you.

I think happiness can rise like an island, unexpectedly. I think there is hidden joy and happiness just waiting for discovery.

Yes, happiness is often a surprise and does come
'...between solitudes,
between pity and fear,
between deluge and drought'.
Beautifully expressed, Susan, especially:
'Rising like an island
in peripheral vision'.
