Phantom Tolls

File:044La puerta.jpg
"The door" by Mexican artist Mauricio García Vega.

Doors into Wonderland were everywhere
Once upon a time

Storytellers began and we went where
Their once-upon led

Down rabbit holes and over rainbows both
Promised a good time

The sign of doors was the light in our eyes
Once upon a time

We huddled over books, brooks and playgrounds
Where portals opened

But now suspect internet doors will lead
Our kids out of time

As if the Pied Piper is lurking there
To collect a debt.

As if our kids no longer followed where
storytellers led.

  2. This is really cool, Susan. The repetition works brilliantly, and the close has teeth.

    1. Thanks, MZ.... of course, we should not fear.

  3. Full of colour and depth and it draws you in and just makes you want to find the answer. Very nicely done.

  5. Oh yes, Susan. My childhood came back to me as I read, along with sadness for the loss of the places into which doors led.
The door in the Vega painting is super scary, however, and would have terrified me at any age.

    1. You have been remembering childhood fears lately. I wish we knew how to make kids look for the same wonder on these new tools.

  6. Hi Susan,

That is definitely a fascinating picture of a door. I have been studying it and so much going on in it. But I really like the poem that says so much about the things children of today are losing by not being taught the beauty of books and the story within. I think if you ask most of the children how books they read last week, we would be lucky if they say one, but ask them how many video games they have played, we would be shocked to hear the word one. And if you did then the child would probably mean once each day of the same game but I guess the better question would be how many hours they have spent doing each one. I think that if we ever lost our electricity for any length of time that maybe it would be a good thing in that children would be forced to read books or get out and actually play in real life. I do remember how happy it was to open up and book as a child and read the first words of "Once upon a time....."

Thanks for sharing such a great trip down memory lane for us here at Theme Thursday, it was fantastic. I hope you have a great week filled with lots of peaceful things to do and many doors to walk through.

    God bless.

    1. Thank you for the great prompt and for commenting. It is possible, however, that such imaginative doors could be found on line too, but there must be guidance.
