Violets are Better than Idleness

lilac Syringa vulgaris in bloom

Lilac bushes and wisteria vine
in my backyard have the task of growing,
and they are doing it with grace, bringing
sweet shades of violet to join the green.

My soul task is to write without knowing
the goal.  I’ve been hesitating, but now
I will begin.  I don’t want plants to think
I find this task too insignificant.

Let me cherish doing my work among
the rest of nature.  Look at little words
and sounds growing like petals in the wind!
Among the violet shades, I delight.
