November

source

Inside we hear howling,

and close curtains

to muffle sounds.

We turn up heat

to comfort sleep, so

miss the midnight frolic

of wind stripping trees

and landscaping yards.

Rusty leaves plunge

to the newly mowed lawn

and for a minute

the green world is gone.

But wind scurries through

them puppy-like;

she only plucked them

to play in the dark night.

She leaves them piled

along walkways, under bushes,

and in flowerbeds,

so morning discovers

green velvet quilts

embroidered

with orange brown floss

slick from chilly dew.

  1. I LOVE the wind playing with the leaves, puppy-like. How sweet. We had huge winds night before last and yesterday and the power was out for 16 hours. Many trees came down. What a job for the highway and hydro workers. Yikes. I love this sweet poem, Susan.

  3. A careful distinction here between the malice of the human world and the moral blamelessness of the natural. It is too bad we shut out the wind. What exuberance. This kept it green for me. Thanks Susan -

  4. The dance of the leaves in the wind is one of the delights of Autumn - a lovely poem of browns and greens!
