Once Upon a Time: An April Fool’s Poem

Areas that observe daylight saving time

Areas that once observed daylight saving time

Areas that have never observed daylight saving time

Once upon a time New Year’s Day was April first

or thereabouts, on Europe's Spring Equinox.

Which makes me think of Daylight Savings Time—

or is it Daylight Time?  One leaps an hour forward

in spring only to turn back in the fall.  But why?

Humans have no power over daylight or spring,

but we have power to name things and to pass laws,

and so, we do.  And we obey, because, perhaps

we can.  Each had its reason once upon a time.

Write a poem every day of April with the 2023 April Poem-A-Day Challenge. For today's prompt, write a foolish poem.

My blog poems are rough drafts.

  1. I was told daylight savings time, in older times, was to gain more daylight for farmers. I like the extra daylight in the evening. But it sounds like BC will stop daylight savings time in fall. Sigh.

  2. A propos of Spring...

    Golf is my shepherd,
    I shall not want.
Golf leads me to play on green pastures.
It takes me beside still creeks and quiet ponds.
It guides me in its ways with etiquette
    for the game's sake.
    Good shots restore my soul.
Golf leads me to appreciate the fellowship of good people
in pursuit of a pleasant day.
Even though I walk through the
commotion of daily bursts of mis-information,
    I fear no evil; for golf is there to distract me;
My driver, my chipper, my putter, they comfort me.
Golf greets me with a new vista on each hole
in the company of my foursome.
We cheer for each other at every success.
The ball drops into the hole.
Surely pars and birdies shall follow us
    all around the golf course
and we shall return all the days of our lives.
