Being Human

I’m too happy to write about whales,

our eroding environment, and displaced refugees today

except to say that I hope all can have days like mine,

safe and relaxed with family, Chopin playing in the background.

Yet tears trickle down my cheeks intermittently, unprovoked

by any specific event, roll out like the ooze of a stream at its source,

a small disturbance in the landscape that means the stream will gather

and flow as a stream, and I will act as a human being.

I send love out from my stable day into the universe to

those who need it and those who give it,

helpers who rise up to meet the time

despite the governments of the world.

  1. Oh, Susan, how I adore your poem, which just says it all, about how it is to be a human being right now, given the governments of the world, none of whom seem to have beating hearts. Thank you for this poem and for linking. I love thinking of you with family , Chopin in the background. And these days, we cry as easily from happiness as we do from grief. The juxtaposition we are being forced to live under unfriendly forces. Your poem says it better than I could ever say.

  2. This is exactly what it must be, Susan...even as our own lives are stable and happy, we can still send out acknowledgement, concern and support. Love how you've written about this.

  5. Your day sounds perfect. Enjoy it, and put the cares of the world behind you for a little while. We all need to find ways of sending out love, each in our own way!
