White Feathers

Kathryn Dyche Dechairo who is part of the challenge at Imaginary Gardens with Real Toads this weekend and whose her portrait with feather is there. Great thanks to Grace for her prompt!

One of joy-luck to be more than ever expected
Two for Forrest to float with the unexpected
(Three holes for earrings to tease jaw bones)
Four for cowardice turned to bravery
Fly away, Fly Away, and Come Back Home

Tiny fingers reach in rooster cages at the fair
Gather down for pillows, braids and boas
Find the source of caged capture, open doors
And see wings with no memory of flight
Fly away, Fly Away, and Come Back Home

Can’t she reach her shoulder blades, wing-stubs
Of cherubs?  Stretch, stretch arms and necks,
Arch backs over bent knees and feel wings glow
Where they once grew on her and all ducklings.
Fly away, Fly Away, and Come Back Home

Posted for Poets United Poetry Pantry #167.   The movies referred to are one: Joy Luck Club, two: Forrest Gump, and four: The Four Feathers.

    1. Thanks, Sherry. It's neat to feel these kinetic images through your eyes.

  2. I love the idea of "Fly away, Fly Away, and come back home." People have to be free to fly away, I think, before they really know the importance of home!

  3. Wow, such great imagery in this, I especially love the second stanza . . . wings with no memory of flight. Inspired.

    1. Thank you, Kathryn. I have a memory of collecting feathers for earrings at the 4-H Youth Fair.

    1. How nice! Thank you, Grace. Despite all, I am feeling mighty positive and ready to relearn walking and running as a prelude to flying.

    1. I was thinking of angels and then "getting your ducks in order." But it is "Ugly Duckling" too! Cool!

  7. There is actually a movie "Fly Away Home" which is a family favorite. Beautiful, this poem bravely searching for freedom.
