Blood

Pull the carpet over the blood, then go
and let’s forget about it, let’s forgive.

Say words releasing you from criminal
intent, magic that puts nightmares to bed.

Recurring dreams and fear may buried be
in warmer blankets, softer pillows, dark.

And dawn deletes what’s left of worry lines—
they’re only shades, not monsters roaring loud.

Pull the carpet over the blood, then go
and let us pray to free the love we need.

Transform from demon back to angel, come
home to face the flood, awake, rejoin.

Dissolve the hate in day and prize the light
alive that lies still hidden deep inside.

  2. The carpet has been pulled over the blood too many times. The recurring dreams repeat and repeat. Sometimes praying is not enough to dissolve the the hate or to transform the demon.

  3. There are many things we pull the carpet over – but this made me think of women subjected to domestic violence, who (for a time anyway) keep hoping the man will change and isn't 'really' like that.

  4. "Let us pray to free the love we need." I love that line, and it is a view I hold myself. But In some cases, I sadly agree with Mary, even prayer cant heal the twisted minds and demons that haunt some dark souls. Beautifully written, my friend. Love is needed everywhere and thankfully it lives in the majority of human hearts, I do believe.

  5. Is it enough to deny the blood and make peace...is it even possible??

  6. You really show how hard it is to hide those sins. I guess accepting the fate removing the carpet is what's needed.

  7. I blame school, then everything is planned out for us but when we are on our own we seem adept at making mistakes. Dark corners and thick carpets then are a must. I think that the only time I was angel I was too young to realize so have forgotten how.

  8. Blood tells a story - it is our unique marker..whether it is our blood or the person who made it spill..in some way i could picture this poem in a domestic scene..what happens behind closed doors and then putting on a face and heading out in the morning as if all is well...but of course it can be applied on a much wider scale...cleverly written, insightful and sadly perhaps all too familiar

  9. "Let us pray to free the love we need." ...the only thing that the world direly needs now...alas this is hardly to be found anywhere in this planet...a beautiful poem...

  11. I struggle with the same questions as the disciples. How long do you forgive?
Forget? Probably not, but I can not hold it against them. Its such a harm way.

  12. I wish we can follow this in our lives. Hatred for hatred is never the solution. The hate must be dissolved. Great poem.

  14. "Dissolve the hate in day and prize the light
alive that lies still hidden deep inside."-- I completely agree with you. Hatred is like a terrible disease that can consume our entire being. Beeter to accept things we cannot change, We all must be willing to forgive....
The concluding lines are powerful, Susan. Beautiful poem.

  15. Carpets are wonderful things... to cover things for a while. But blood has a way of seeping through most things; as your penultimate stanza suggests, we should find a way to "face the flood" and change things.

  16. What a wonderful repeated line, "pull the carpet over the blood." Something so menacing and yet lovely about this.

  17. I'm pretty sure the blood should not be spilled...somethings are better left unseen...

  18. Beautiful words, on a tragic subject, though sometimes I am so stressed that to sleep does bring the light and a better perspective.

  19. As they used to say on the old CSI's, blood doesn't lie. You can cover it or wash it away but truth has a way of making it seen. This is a wonderful, powerful, true poem.

  20. My first time here, I think - interesting work and will be back to see what you come up with next... "prize the light
alive that lies still hidden deep inside." Amen to that! With Best Wishes Scott www.scotthastie.com

  21. Blood can mean so many things can't it? You, then someone above in a comment mentioned forgiveness. You are both were right on. Forgiveness somehow cleanses everything. I enjoyed your poem

  22. I felt the harsh reality in the first lines of trying to sweep it all under the carpet, and then the message changed for me to one of more hope as we pull the carpet and let go...dissolve our fears and find the love we need....fabulous lines!

  25. A beautifully rendered articulation about human corruption - the disconnect, from that which we should be involved in setting to rights. "Pull the carpet over the blood, then go" ... an eloquent and evocative line.

  27. Well you can tell from the comments that you have made the reader think. Can we cover anger, destruction, evil? I dont think so but I think we have the choice as you state to love rather than hate. Evil doesnt' erase evil only goodness can.

  28. Pulling the rug over, to hide the conscience of blood and wrongs have always been the way out. It is a temporary solution that can flare up at later times and perhaps after the loss of lives and sufferings. A pity! Very thoughtful write Susan!

  29. Well I hope we stop pulling the carpet over blood, that we face our guilts and then definitely release the love. i do believe there's plenty of it. but ignorance keeps it under the rug.

  30. pulling the carpet over the blood does not make the stain go away...I think it lingers for a very long time...

  31. As a former abuse victim, I relate and understand this, but also know that sooner or later that carpet gets too heavy to move and then one must make the choice to move oneself, leaving the carpet behind.

  32. How long will we pull the carpet over the blood? I guess until we can no longer bear its screaming. Powerful piece Susan!

  34. You can't answer with hate to hate, but also - to cover carpet over the blood... So, it's to be healed accepting that not yet everyone on the same level of consciousness...

  35. Beautifully penned. How long does one cover the sins...hide behind a mask? One needs to face it, fond a way to see the inner light...
