What Can Be

Location of Maldives in the Indian Ocean.
Maldives in the Indian Ocean.

In twenty-five years when I am ninety
earth gently swirls its rain to crops in need
potential becomes actuality.

All life seeks partnership, and I foresee
humans relaxing gain for grains' relief
In twenty-five years when I am ninety.

Listen! It calls. The lover once set free
exchanges bead for bead in planting seed
potential becomes actuality.

Islands galore welcome all in for tea
their restored shores garlanded with seaweed
In twenty-five years when I am ninety.

Food varies with landscape, soil and degree
as we be animals with young to feed
potential becomes actuality.

Verbalize your knowledge of what can be
in stories woven to decrease our greed
In twenty-five years when I am ninety
potential becomes actuality.

  1. Sadly I can't see humans relaxing gain for grains relief however I do see us eating seaweed and a lot of creeping crawly things that hopefully will keep my grandchildren and their offspring alive. There is much potential if we dare to alter our eating habits and become chemical free. I loved the hope you portray in what I see as bleak picture.

  5. I so hope so. What a beautiful vision and - it is told - if we can conceive it, we can achieve it. I love the hope and peace in this poem.

    1. Do you think it will take us more time? Here's some hope:

  15. I am an optimist like you on this one, Susan. I see young kids nowadays being much more environmentally conscious and responsible than their parents.
    A good write!
