My Christmas cactus doesn’t bloom
but instead holds its perfect green
leaf stalks up and out of its pot,
looking proud to be safe and seen.

It shares a window sill with my
angel wing begonia, leaves green
on the top and red underneath.
It, too, stands tall and safe and seen.

My cactus and begonia frame
the tall magnolia tree outside,
not quite naked in its yellow
dress and carpet of leaves spread wide.

Together they remind me to be brave,
that no matter the weather, they’re
holding their own with water and love,
here to keep the peace and clean the air.

  1. "safe and seen" - that's the perfect spot to be in... makes me think that most of us are only one or the other...thoughtproving, Susan!

  2. Yes, to be safe and seen is a good thing, whatever the weather inside or out. It makes me think -- if they can hold their own, so can we! Lovely photo too.

  3. I love that window and well remember the glorious magnolia in bloom and how it fills the entire window with beauty. I like "they remind me to be brave." I imagine Mariah enjoys that window ledge.

  4. It's so wonderful to be happy in one's own space like the Christmas cactus. "....they’re / holding their own" This is an inspiring takeaway for me.

  6. Great title for your poem as the plants are seen and safe. I have many plants in my plants and they bring me much joy. Plants are resilient and can teach us a thing or two.

  7. Do you let that cactus dry out every couple of months before watering? Mom said something like that....

  9. Beautiful...I love how two housplants frame a tree growing outside your window. It is a lesson on what we as humans should be doing. I often talk to my plants. They area forest on my tables and windowsills.
