Honoring chairs

The chair I’m sitting on
to reach this keyboard is
tall enough to help me stand and
short enough to take off shoes and socks
and put them on again.
It has wheels to roll into positions
necessary for each task,
and even for sitting at the kitchen table
next to the plain wooden kitchen chair.
It nods to the kitchen chair
and to the shorter armchair
in burgundy upholstery
that sits by the window.
Ah,” it ruminates, “I’m definitely superior
to stationary chairs who don’t have
my metal infrastructure.”
I laugh at it, and let it think so.
It’s comfortable enough for writing,
but not for reading or for eating.
Each chair carries its own stories.
It takes more than one sitting place
to make a home.

  1. I love a chair by a window. I cant have one in my small room as the desk has to be at the window. It has wheels too and I have worn it out completely by sitting in it so much for all these years. I have to hide its disrepair under a (wolf) blanket. Smiles. I loved seeing your chairs. I imagine you miss the big window in your last place with the glorious magnolia........

  2. Aww...a little bit puffed up, that pretty, pink chair. But the arm chair by the window seems to be a comfy one that serves better I feel and without ego. Smiles.

  3. I smiled at the stories of the chairs. Yes, there are different chairs and each serve a purpose in our lives.

  5. I never read other poet’s words before I respond to a prompt, Susan, so I smiled when I read your poem, to think that I wrote about a cushion to go on your chair! I also smiled at the chair nodding at the other chairs and ruminating. We all have our favourite chairs, too.
