My parents were happy

“My mother and father were happy.”
As a child, I caught rare glimpses.
Photographs help me to remember
their big smiles, their playful tongue faces,
how they hugged, Sunday rides over hills
and to the Hudson River, play days at
the Catskill Game Farm, visits to friends,
holidays. Story time and bedtime.
School days slip from memory.
Raising children was serious business.
But in their seventy-three-year marriage,
joy returned again and again.  Dad interacted
in the neighborhood. Mom became an artist.
The fruits of their happiness surround me still.

  1. I enjoyed this poem, Susan. Your parents were good examples of how to lead a good life! I am glad that "the fruits of their happiness" still surround you. I enjoyed this poetic glimpse of your childhood. We used to take Sunday drives too....and I enjoyed them so much! (Especially when Mother packed a picnic lunch that we could eat in a park somewhere enroute)

Was that your childhood dog? Name? Breed?

  2. How wonderful to have happy parents! Such a gift to a child. It gives them a strong platform on which to build their lives. I love that joy returned again and again. How heartwarming.

  3. Such blissful memories! "Photographs help me to remember/ their big smiles,..."This is true for me too. But I remember playing with my father and his funny words.
