At the Tranquility Salon

Don’t muse on Vietnam and French nails now,
but sigh, lean back, indulge in gentle chat
until warm foot baths and foot massage take you
to melting easiness and calm in safe
high chairs that hold your back in ecstasy
despite the city traffic honking crass
and loud outdoors.  But don’t let that rage in.

Close eyes and ears to television soaps
and put away cell phones at last, enter
the service, hold it dear and sigh, exhale
nail polish chemicals to drift in dreams
of next year’s vacation retreat quiet
with bells for ending meditation.  Time
to go. First, tip the priest in gratitude.

  1. Ah, there is so much tranquility in just letting one soak in the joy of a manicure and pedicure. To melt into the experience somehow gives one a sense of peace!

  4. Safe for me is the key word here - as a well looked after child can be free and spontaneous and happy knowing he/she is safe...yes nurturing ourselves can be tranquility indeed..

  12. This is a great take on tranquilty. I often tip a little extra so the priest "worshiping" my feet will rub them a few minutes longer and to have the pleasure of sitting in that vibrating chair. Having someone nurture you, even just the feet, is indeed restful tranquility. And thank you again for the prompt.

  14. Indulging in being spoiled this way is clearly a great pleasure that you wish would never end. Occasionally I have a therapeutic massage and have in fact fallen asleep on one occasion!

  15. I enjoyed the idea of pedicurist as priest and felt the outside business pressing against the tranquility.

  20. A pedicure as a religious experience is a hoot....especially the bit about tipping the priestess:)

  21. To be able to indulge oneself like you describe, Susan, is wonderful. Still, how many people in our society who are able to do this, choose not and lead more and more hectic lives... And for what reason? Make more money, keep up with the Joneses, buy more and more consumer goods? We need to learn to relax and regain the tranquillity our modern lifestyle denies us. Well-penned.
