To Survive

Whale at Port San Luis, photo by Dawn Beattie

From crying creatures
everywhere, streams
of tears flow into
rivers heading sea-
ward where whales respond

Oooohhh

Or is it whales
who initiate tears
joined upstream by
sentient creatures?
Transform now. We die

Oooohhh

Racing to survive
by slowly changing,
we moan toward each
other, silently
moving, echoing

Oooohhh

Hurry, we haven’t
much time to get there.
We’ll have to go more
than halfway.  We'll have
to change completely.

  1. So very true that we do need to change our ways completely. We ARE so quickly running out of time.... There are way too many 'crying creatures' everywhere.. I hope many of those who cry will be spared.

  4. The callous way we treat the rivers and oceans is heartbreaking especially when it is for such short term gain in mining ventures or in Australia's precious Great Barrier reef for for easier access for tankers and ore carriers. We must keep singing our song.

  7. Yes - we need to on many levels - global, local and internally...sometimes seeing is very far from the next step of trying to change/transform things - a powerful poem...

  10. The whales song so beautiful and yet so mournful, they are such wonderful creatures..oh, the initiation of tears so sad..we must go more than halfway.

    Or is it whales
    who initiate tears
    joined upstream by
    sentient creatures?
    Transform now. We die

  11. I love the cry of the whales joining or inviting other creatures. We must join this cry too and change completely. They(we) musn't die. Very touching poem Susan. Such a sad reality.

  12. Sadly true but still, the hope at the end. Such a different take on the prompt and just lovely. Water is our life and these beautiful creatures - both we treat with such savage disregard. Wonderful write.

  13. The tragedy is that mankind is not readily able to determine the varied variety of sea creatures. We are not able to say which among them are extinct. In the meantime they are being killed for food or sports. Good twist to the prompt Susan!

  18. I feel bereft.

Your poem Susan, reminded me of all the things we have failed to protect, to safeguard, to fight for.

  19. A melancholy poem for the sad song of the dying whales. Unless we change, we shall be left alone in the wasteland. Powerful write, Susan.
