Build a Bridge
What if we, like spiders, dared to swing out into the unknown to find
What if we, like spiders, dared to swing out into the unknown to find
purchase for spanning our species’ future? What if we could take each
other there with effort, with enough fuel?
What if the song in our hearts were enough fuel?
What if coming from the multitudes were enough?
What if containing those multitudes were enough?
What if our identical molecules were enough?
What if our love of adventure were enough?
What if our love of children were enough?
What if our love of self were enough?
I am enough because I eat and sleep,
because I button my shirt,
because I love the color of the living,
because I have loved.
because I button my shirt,
because I love the color of the living,
because I have loved.
Swing with me now past the shore of the oceans, past the edge of the atmosphere, or if you cannot, wait where you are.
I will return to tell you what I have learned, or if I cannot,
paper boats will fly truth to you like messages from the gods.
paper boats will fly truth to you like messages from the gods.

I enjoyed the questions you asked, Susan...and kept thinking that we DO have things that we can learn from the lowly spider.
ReplyDeletewe are enough...and i think someone swung out there like a spider tonight...just saying...smiles...glad it went well for you...that is awesome! send those paper boats of truth...i am waiting...smiles.
ReplyDeleteI love the way you have ended this, Susan. Walt sure can inspire even from the grave, can't he?
ReplyDelete'taking dares all the way to the salt sea' what a life-affirming line. Love the inspiration, the poem at Real Toads, and most especially the paper boats. I would like to volunteer to paint them with human marks that stir the soul. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThank you Anna! I would love for you to paint the paper boats!
DeleteI really liked this. It is filled with so much life, and the confidence to live it fully.
ReplyDeletejust love the paper boat image and the swinging past the shore of the oceans, past the edge of the atmosphere...oh i like much
ReplyDeleteThank you, Claudia, for liking it so vocally! Bless you!
DeleteAll of us are enough just the way we are...if only we could see that... Your ending was filled with inspiration...love those paper boats!
ReplyDeleteI wish we could all convince each other and then take hands around the world.
DeleteDeep contemplations indeed. And I love this line:
ReplyDelete"because I love the color of the living"
...great poetic capture.

Thank you, my friend! So kind of you!
DeleteLove your passionate voice specially this line : Swing with me now past the shore of the oceans, past the edge of the atmosphere, or if you cannot, wait where you are.
ReplyDeleteI hear those echoes of Walt. He woke me up to the songs in my heart when I was nineteen. I've had a lifetime love affair of swinging through the macro/micro worlds with him. Loved this poem, Susan!
ReplyDeleteStunning, Susan...especially the last stanza. And I have to believe our poetry is like one of those paper boats.
