A Place to Belong

Newspapers are incongruous in a mowed field
that invites you to run and throw sticks for a dog
who waits impatiently.  Great shepherds will welcome
the “come here” signal, after sitting, standing,
drawing themselves forward a foot or two, until
their heads lie on your knees, and their big brown eyes beg
“Come, play with me."  Ignoring them is indecent
on a mist-filled morning, sunbeams parting the clouds.

A newspaper is incongruous in this field
that invites you to run and throw sticks for a dog
and so are shoes and dresses, benches and mowed grass,
perfumes and bowing to royalty on their thrones.
Luckily—in dream time—there are fox or wolves
inviting old people to come along with them,
there are humans who meet the wild and walk toward
the edge of time and the beginning of story

where sky woman floats down to land amid unnamed
animals who offer her a place to belong.

  2. This is SO wonderful. I thought the same thing. I could not read a paper and ignore such a beautiful being. I really love the dreamtime invitations of foxes and wolves, and how sky woman came to be welcomed by the animals.

  3. I agree, when faced with nature and four legged friends one should be doing more than staring at a newspaper. I absolutely love this Susan!!

  4. Very true. Who could continue with such an encounter? Loved the dream and fantasy angle, too. Nice one.

  5. Your concept of dream time is where I would choose to be.

  6. It always surprises me on these ekphrastic prompts how many different ways there are to see the same thing. Here you bring what seems at first a very matter of fact tone, but it soon changes to the lyric, even mystic, as you place the images in your own context. I really felt the bond of love and belonging between all living things reaching out to enfold the reader. The end, as others have said,is especially lovely.
