Holy Saturday

Icon for Holy and Great Saturday.
16th c. Russian

Each one is, I suppose, holy. Each day is holy.
But today I’m thinking of Jesus on the day when
most of the world supposed him dead and those
he told he’d rise in three days doubted him.

Yesterday a horrible death, tomorrow resurrection,
but today? Don’t question what Jesus did this day,
but interrogate the rest of God’s children who waited
or cried, who ate and sighed, who obeyed orders or lied.

Whether then were sabbath or the Harrowing of Hell,
now Saturdays are ours to share and open the gates
of prisons. Holy Saturday would be a good day of
forgiveness. Yes. A good day to close death row forever.

What with the blessings of Easter supportive to the elements around. How have you been Susan, Ma'am?
