“planet earth is blue and
there’s nothing I can do.”
David Bowie, Space Oddity
Our mouth opens, closes
lines of teeth, churchyards
in the darkness of tongue
pinkness wipes them again
and again, lips open
lips close, and they call this
singing, kissing, eating
drinking blood and meaning
while spinning almost out
of sight and mind and earth
so far away we forget
to subtract yellow from
green (or green from yellow)
is the natural way
to get blue, ice blue cold.
Our roots severed, we drift
beyond our hard marble
and try to recall when
home was more than blue.

A rich palette of colour and meaning. A thought provoking poem.
ReplyDelete"We try to recall when home was more than blue." I love that.
ReplyDelete"and try to recall when
ReplyDeletehome was more than blue."
makes me wonder what we did to all the rest of the colours... and that atoms for peace caption is ominous.
Planet earth is blue right now for sure, but not in a good way. I love the flow of your words here!
ReplyDeleteSome very compelling metaphors here, from the very first comparison of teeth and church(grave)yards. Mouths move endlessly, for good, for growth, for gain, for evil, and colors that bleed into each other obscure their own true selves. I love the way you have made blue talk here.

ReplyDeleteA powerful poem. I especially like your ending. The feeling of being untethered and at a loss.
Our roots severed, we drift
beyond our hard marble
and try to recall when
home was more than blue.
