Living Joy

Cannes Film Festival

When I list things that ever brought me joy, I am surprised to find

hidden under the edge of depression twelve separate types

of things—none of which I do now.  Why?  Once I called these things leadings

from God, but now, with limited belief, I call them simply passions.

Hmm.  My passions were not all simple.  Teaching was a complex

career that grows humans like gardening grows plants—each to its own

perfection.  I cannot go back there, but other passions—walking

in gardens and forests with friends, writing a poem or story,

eating meals prepared just right, praying in color, and more—are

accessible.  Not complicated.  Passion in bed, in career, and

in daily little things are different, but only in degree.

They tend toward joys that keep out the doings of the world.

They lead to insights from the earth.  Whether leadings from God or

simply passions, they invite me to step toward myself and joy.
