Time is the Key

You think you know the combination to
me, as if I am a locker or safe
you can open at your convenience.

Ha!  I forget the way in as often
as I remember it, and then go all
the way to the Creator to get it.

And that’s OK with me.  I like the time
the journey takes.  I like the company.
These are the only hints I can give you.

Everyone is so different, and a combination that works to figure someone out may change from one day to another, even for the person themselves. People are not like locks, where the combination is fixed. People's 'combinations' change every day. Your poem got me thinking, Susan!

  2. This is an interesting take on the prompt. I love it, especially the last line.

  3. The first stanza is spot on, so is the close and the journey in between. I see the poet's indulging smile too. Absolutely brilliant Susan.

  4. The last verse is fabulous! "The combination to me" is such a great way to put it and the journey with someone who wants to know it can only be a pleasure!

  5. Oh yes, time is indeed the key, Susan, although we never really know someone completely, and people I think I know often surprise me. I love the extended metaphor in this poem.

  6. There is a problem with lockers and safes, though they offer safety, it is hard to breath in a locker or safe. Humans looks for ways to feel safe. annell

  7. I think we are all always a mystery to ourselves. And thus to others as well.

  8. Very cleverly and cogently done, Susan. I adore the "Ha!" There is a song by the Who that goes "Don't pretend that you know me/ Cos I don't even know myself." I think it's called The Seeker. What a maze a human being is.

  9. Susan,
I think it's important that there are aspects of ourselves, that truly remain personal. Divulging details about thoughts and opinions, can sometimes return a response we may not have been expecting.
Perhaps it's our inner core, advising wisdom when it's required.
