The Little Mermaid drawn by Vilhelm Pedersen. |
Fundamentally, water calls bodies back home
Fun, then, to speculate about being mermaids
Fun to invert fairy tales so they reflect us.
Fundamental to mermaids is catch and release
Fun to take an imaginary friend swimming
Fun to take an imaginary friend swimming
Fun to splash her as long as she can laugh, no more.
Fundamentally, fun beckons and we resist
Fun, then, to let go, get lost in it, forget that
Fun is forbidden. Fun’s the fuel for my engine.
Function and action of the moment, I dive deep
Funny, I can now do impossible movements
Fun to swim as if flying, butterflying home.

"Fun to invert fairy tales so they invert us"
ReplyDeleteVery insightful Susan. All of creation dwells within us. We can make it a fun process to present in poetry and other art forms
Much💛love
"Fun, then, to speculate about being mermaids"...This is one thing I couldn't learn :(
ReplyDeleteTo have fun as fuel for our engine, diving deep and butterflying home is the best way of living.
This is super-fun to read.
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy the way you play with words, and this poem shows exactly why. It reads like a dance in water, as if I'm there swimming and splashing and laughing... going from mermaid to butterfly and again, just having fun... and being.
You've done magic with the title, too. With the way you wrapped it around the poem from beginning to end.
I love this, especially the flying and butterflying home.
ReplyDeleteSuch a fun combination of mermaids and butterfly. Really enjoyed your word play.
ReplyDeleteLove this..".fun to fly as if swimming!!"
ReplyDeleteI had fun navigating along mermaids, fairy tales and butterflying I really loved this
ReplyDeleteIndeed it is a lot of fun to wander into the fairy tale world, where imagination has no borders..a very interesting poem, a new look at ways of 'having fun in life'
ReplyDeleteI love the mystique in this. Fun in watery dreams. So nice how you wove this fun write.
ReplyDeleteFun as fuel. I love that image! May that fuel be in all our creative lives!
ReplyDeleteFunnily enough I looked at your illustration and my immediate though was that this poor mermaid has no legs so can't exercise like us so is a little tubby round the waist. She'll have to accept she will never catch that butterfly. Loved the poem Susan.
ReplyDeleteFundamentally, Fun!
ReplyDeleteI love the way every line starts with ‘Fun’ and the repetition of the ‘f’ sound reminds me of shivering in the sea. I would love to be a mermaid having fun with my sisters, inverting fairy tales!
ReplyDeleteSwimming in the sea is more than fun....it is a totally magnificent experience which no one should miss out on.Rock On Mermaids ! :)
ReplyDeleteFun to read, and I love the illustration!
ReplyDeleteFun is the part and parcel of life. Well-worded.
