"A distant future" photography by Raluca Caragea

Would that after
death I could be
resurrected as a tree
Indeed if trees exist
at all
I’d like to be one in
the fall
when I have red and
yellow dress
and end up naked—which
is best—
until my finger ends uncurl
and new green dress I do unfurl.
(I have some friends
who would prefer
becoming an evergreen
fur.)
I’d welcome the kind
company
of every single type
of tree
If all humans revive
this way
we’ll bring full
forests back someday

I love this so much, especially the closing couplet. Awesome, Susan! Made me smile. They actually do have pods for natural burial, that a tree grows out of. That intrigues me.
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful Susan! I love the idea of us all coming back as trees and the forest being filled again. Gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the human qualities of your tree. We would be fortunate to experience this interpretation of reincarnation.
ReplyDeleteBeautifully done! So deep yet with great humour.
ReplyDeleteLove all the tree imagery in this, Susan! A hope-filled poem.

ReplyDeleteA wonderful capture of the seasons of a tree, with a good bit of advice as well!
This is beautiful, Susan. I think I would like to be a tree dressed in green, but I would enjoy the company of all trees: whatever their color, size, shape, or age!! What a creative approach here.
ReplyDeleteAwesome!!
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty to think so, yeah? Somebody said that once, at the end of a novel.
