At the Living Edge

source

When I am not shaking on the edge
but awake and listening beyond
the sunlight on the surface of moons,
I sense the secret of steadiness—
which is this—that creation does not
pause because one of us tires or God
(by any and all names) concentrates
elsewhere. Creation without ceasing
forms its own safety net now that we
are many and are productive as
the trees and mushrooms who teach us.

If I take my eyes off destruction,
I will not cause the earth to expire.
Indeed, the earth is waiting for us
to grow on the living edge of soul.

  1. The secret of steadiness is truly what we need as a third covid wave surges here in India. Hope 2022 is gentle and the worst is well behind us. Wish you a very happy new year, Susan. Stay safe!

  2. In our community of earth-lovers it is dangerously easy to develop monocular vision attuned to destruction and its despairs -- to develop tunnel-vision and drive straight into the wreck. This "secret of steadiness" - "creation without ceasing" -- is the world we can't see for that vision and presents a place to thrive, even in this time - "the living edge of soul." Amen, friend, and thanks for the earthweal gift.

  3. I completely agree with you. I look at the destruction just so I know where it's at but my main focus in on the living soul at the edge (such a wonderful way to express the inexpressible). Thank you for your uplifting and inspiring poem. Suzanne - Mapping Uncertainty

  5. Oh yes, that is exactly what earth needs us to do - to grow our souls and connect back in. Wonderfully expressed, Susan. Our power was out yesterday so I am late making the rounds.
