Light Like Honey

Frosty Morning by Joseph Mallord William Turner (1813)

A pale-yellow horizon is the dawn
lifting the twilight into haziness.
A day stripped of drama, subdued and calm,
leaves me with a remnant of moodiness
to chase out thoughts of obligation and
invite in intention to rest in bed.
Days like this, I cuddle up with my cat
and with my love of life—the earth-based God.

The possibility of heaven on
earth reclaims hope from the afterlife.
Which hell is worse, to slaughter innocents
under war’s umbrella or, slower,
to cut off the leaves of earth so
it cannot maintain and feed itself?
These two indwelling hells on earth can’t be
the limit of what we see through dawn’s gold.

Golden light, coat me like honey.  Help me
to see heaven here where we each live and
work, to see heaven everywhere humans
unite in earth work, to see how to grow.
Dawns like this, I cuddle up in bed with
my cat and with my love of life in God.
As dawn’s golden light fades to day’s grey, I
rise intent on sharing heaven here, now.

April is poetry month, day 13.

My blog poems are rough drafts.

  1. Beautiful, the golden light, the comfort, and the rising to share goodness and hope.
