Northern Cardinal Song

Today cardinals’ whistles pierce my ears
and rivet me to the outside table.

Shrrrl-rrr is the come-to-me call, and ssrrrrl-
rrr is the where-are-you call.  I see them

finding each other over the garage
and in the budding lilac trees, he red

as a stoplight and her a more subtle
red fade to brown.  Both have their beaks open.

I expect they’ll kiss somewhere more private.
They ignore the pow sounds of staples and nails

from nearby roofs, and blaring honks from cars.
They are not distracted by other song.

I, myself, hum an old Michael Jackson
song: “Lead me, love me and feed me, kiss me . . . .”

Shrrrl-rrr is the come-to-me call, and ssrrrrl-
rrr is the where-are-you call.  I see them . . . .

2023 April PAD Challenge: Day 12

For today's prompt, write a sound poem. . . . This could be a poem filled with rhymes or alliteration, but it could also be about listening to sounds that are being made.
