Cameo, July 2024

Sarah Siddons, 1784 - Wedgwood Museum - Barlaston, Stoke-on-Trent, England - DSC09706

Women
climb out of past frames
to walk barefoot on pine needles,
to speed run
for office in one hundred days,
to restore legal rights, and
to thrive.

Women
survive as people
with voices, votes, and violins
when not stopped
by short-sighted profit seekers
with little harmony in
their souls.

For Sumana's prompt "A Cameo Appearance" at What's Going On?

(Trying the cameo form in poetry : 2, 5, 8, 3, 8, 7, 2)

*The Cameo depicts Sarah Siddons, famous 18th C. Welsh actress.

  1. "to walk barefoot on pine needles,
to speed run"....I love the imagery telling us how much tough a journey could be taken up by these dedicated, empathetic women at the forefront especially against the formidable opponents 'with little harmony in / their souls.' A beautiful homage with much respect and love.

  11. I had to look at your cameo before I tried it, to make sure I understood the form. Thank you for that, Susan, and for this amazing poem. I imagined all the women climbing out of past frames to achieve equality.

  12. One cameo speaking for many women as we move into the future, beautifully expressive of our struggles and goals. Beautifully conveyed, Susan. I love your use of verbs like "climb out" and "survive" to underline the struggle, and details of what has been achieved.
