A Blessed Day

It’s a blessed time that brings the Chinese new year and Ramadan
and enough of a pause in our nation’s anti-Democracy to notice
and wish joy to those who celebrate and fast, celebrate and dance,
celebrate in the time-proven ritual respect for the universe.

We’re heading toward springtime, with winter still in force
and more winter of the spirit to come, though some
celebrate strength and persistence in the face of anti-
Democracy, witnessing and stopping masked armies.

Some of us watch, heart in throat, for our turn, grateful for
the lessons of citizen activism that we can learn from before
the buds of government overreach blossom in our cities.
Blessed be the hopeful, blessed be the peace of this day.

  1. Given how things are, those who stand up and show strength in the face of oppression are truly blessed. Let's hope the year of the fire horse brings us some new energy!

  2. How I LOVE "Blessed be the hopeful, blessed be the peace of this day." Beautiful, Susan. I keep waiting for the "Enough!" that will turn this ship around. It is coming, I have no doubt. When tens of thousands show up for peace and justice, as they have been doing, we are on the way. (We live in hope.) I love the activism in your poems.

  4. It is nice to be heading toward springtime! It is 50 degrees and sunny here today, and this makes me hopeful that winter is on its way out. However, I realize there WILL be more to come. I am trying to concentrate on celebrating strength and persistance! We keep seeing areas where this is blooming, like flowers, and hopefully it will spread so that the buds of government overreach will be squelched. A fine poem, Susan.

  7. Nicely written Susan 👏 Not that it really matters to the message of the poem, but the lunar new year is in June. Now is Chinese New Year.

  8. Susan, you did good on the blessing dig. Yes, even with our twisted government we are better than most with blessings.

  9. Your ending line is powerful as we need to remain hopeful that peace will enter the day.
