Unspoken

Unspoken
Great love for the world
In the face of devastation, and fear
love be judged merely sentimental
Unspoken
Great grief for humanity
who can treat others cruelly, and fear
grief will be rejected by family
Unspoken
Ministry in meeting for worship
While waiting to feel an extra push
Or to hear another speaking the same
Unspoken
Empathy with others—
Their love and pain and grief—
When silence is easier
Unspoken
Gratitude for love given
When least expected, or love
Expected and received

  1. This resonates so much, Susan - the unspoken grief, empathy and ministry when silence is easier. I love the gratitude for love unexpected. There is a LOT in this poem to contemplate. As always, I so admire your work in beloved community. You walk the talk.

  2. Each of your stanzas resonates. There are so many situations in which leaving things unspoken is the easier course....but to speak the words would be the better / kinder / more loving course. Such a thoughtful poem.

  3. What a beautifully crafted poem - it was like a reflection - perhaps even a silent prayer shared in a valued community - Jae

  4. It's true, often silence is the easiest path to tread, Susan. And I am guilty of it many-a-time. However, words are so powerful and not only can they hurt and wound, but they are also soothing, and a balm for tortured souls. I guess the ultimate wisdom is knowing when to keep silent and when to speak, or speak out, using the right words on each occasion!

  5. Unspoken with words but spoken by actions.

  6. Silence is easier, unless you are burdened by what might have been said.
