My artist mom found and
saved a small twist of wood,
sanded and polished it
until its organic
grain gleamed. She set it on
a wooden pedestal
where it resembles a
dark knight on a chess board’s
black square. Yet, unlike
in the war game, it holds
the tranquility of
a grazing animal.
It has lived on my bookshelf
for decades. I touch
its smooth surface and
think of its creator,
a woman who loved the
beauty in natural things.

It is beautiful. To me, it looks like a creature of the wild......."A woman who loved the beauty in natural things" is a woman after my own heart.
ReplyDeleteIt's an amazing art-work using found objects. I love how you celebrate your Mom through her art. "I touch
ReplyDeleteits smooth surface and / think of its creator,..." So moving!
I love what your mother did with this twisted piece of wood, Susan. She made it beautiful. A true talent.
ReplyDeleteThese words move me:
" I touch
its smooth surface and
think of its creator,
a woman who loved the
beauty in natural things."
I am so glad you have this piece of art to touch! It must be comforting.
What a wonderful tribute to your mum and so good to share the beauty still - of her soul and her art - Jae
ReplyDeleteA beautiful memory of your mother and her special gift.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful. I'd want to touch it, too. I love this tribute to the "ordinary" beauty of a simple, oft overlooked thing and the woman who noticed. And I love that you have this special treasure as well.
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful piece of artwork. A treasured gift for sure.
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful on first sight. However, knowing who made it and why makes it infinitely more beautiful! You must cherish it, Susan!"
ReplyDeleteAn ode to your mum and the art she made and it shows that nature is beautiful. Very moving
