Wholeness

Klimt Tree of Life 1909.jpg
Tree of Life, Gustav Klimt (1909)

“There is in all visible things…a hidden wholeness.”
~Thomas Merton

God romps through The Family Tree of Art
infinitely more often than we who
are yet visible, who work through Branches
of it to create and then deconstruct forms
looking for what plays in-through-around-at—
beyond our nature deep in Nature’s Tree.

To make, unmake, reform ever over
makes us (like changing seasons) synced with truth.
Unknowingly, we are exactly what
we seek—a perfect form revealing what
we want to own and never can because
we’re only part of The Family Tree.

Do you see me as imperfectly as
I see you (and all Nature too)?  Our hope
lies in relationship of each to each—
not separate and lonely artistry
but connected and symbiotic, or
else only dead meat left of amputees.

But God plays through each part of the famed Tree
of Art, inviting us to join with hints
and whiffs in the imitations we make—
our music curls our inner ear and still
arts train our eyes, while skin—our largest sense-
u-all organ—is always on!  How Brilliant!

Perpetual motion creates the glow
the Tree gives off—innumerable counts
of luminosity as if on fire.
And so, look up!  Ascend to Tree Tip Top.
Tune in with Sun and Stars for a glance
at how Earth’s Nature looks within God’s Dance.

Mastery—what is that?
The beginning of the end, perhaps,
if we are harnessed to
our own poor devices—our gifts to humanity
displayed in global warnings for all to see—
life a bargain for a brief
small slice of mortality.

But let us rediscover fire—
this time emerging from our love of life,
aflame to know and brighten earth’s many parts—
including humans,
particles of rock,
and waves and atmospheres—
planet’s petals and roots
and marbled veins flowing with blood.

How not to harm?
Let us master that—
or, with love the motive—
throw away duality
to see more intricate
and delicate reality
connecting us to earth (our home and family)
Imagine that!
Accepting all diminishes none.

Let’s rediscover fire in opened hearts—
know loving kindness gift and given,
warp and woof in coats of every color.
Let’s harness sparks of energy
as part of God’s answer
to scarcity and loss—
ever renewing love
not scarce at all.

    *Prometheus (from Wikipedia):
("forethought") is a Titan in Greek mythology, best known as the creator of mankind and its greatest benefactor, who gifted mankind with fire stolen from Mount Olympus.

Quest

Australian Pelican watching beach sunrise.jpg

Go with the waves, do not fight and do not fear
the froth of daily sweat which feeds your heart.
Trusting its rise and fall, your way is clear.

Wave as friends pass, but to your course adhere.
You cannot exchange places or take part –
Go with the waves; do not fight and do not fear.

Though it seems your friends too soon disappear,
they leave gifts that nurture your greatest art.
Trusting their rise and fall, your way is clear.

It’s time to take your sabbatical year
and discover paths leading off the chart.
Go with the waves; do not fight and do not fear.

Your spirit can manage the vast frontier—
Listen to breath’s rhythm as you depart.
Trusting its rise and fall, your way is clear.

Your experience serves to engineer—
No greater science and no martial art—
Go with the waves; do not fight and do not fear.
Trusting their rise and fall, your way is clear.

Liberty

Silver-haired mother of four, grandmother
of hundreds and friend of the heart to me,
Liberty healed others with books she read
and dispensed—this 5-foot tall elder who
has the same middle name—Lisbeth—as I.

Wide grin under twinkly blue eyes, silence
held her thoughts until requested and then
her tree-ring wrinkles lifted as she spoke
and resettled perfectly around her smile.
She won at scrabble, cheating guilelessly.

She gave away all her pots and pans but
one, divesting before moving into
assisted living.  We worshipped reading
aloud.  When her memory went, we found
the same passages thrilled daily anew.

Her ministry was one of loving words
and thoughts as they embraced each other and
mingled in sentences and paragraphs,
accumulated daringly between
covers, and then opened to spark freedom.
